WireShark - Network Protocol Analyzer
| During your development process, have you run into situations where you need to find out what's going on in the network? On the NonStop side, you can use SCF* to start a network trace, but what can you use if you want to trace the network on the PC? What you need is a software network analyzer tool, like Wireshark.
Wireshark is easy to use, downloads in 15 minutes or less for immediate use, and best of all, it's FREE! Starting and stopping a trace is quite straightforward by following the instructions on the screen, Here are a couple of tips to get you started:
START TRACE After you start the program, you will need to select the NETWORK ADAPTER that you want to use on before starting the trace. It will default to that adapter for subsequent traces.
DISPLAY FILTER Because the tool traces ALL network traffic, the result trace file can be quite large and may be difficult to sift through. You can tell it to display only specific trace data, e.g. certain IP address or port number) by using the DISPLAY FILTER feature. Click on DISPLAY FILTER and put in criteria like IP address or port, and the display will know only show entries that match those criteria.
Go ahead and try it. Remember: the best time to learn a tool is BEFORE you need it! You can download this free tool from Wireshark * For information on how to do NonStop SCF trace, visit TIC Knowledgebase
